WHAT IS BALLET?

Ballet is a style of dance known for graceful flowing movements, turn out of the legs, precision and discipline. Ballet dancers perform elegant movements of the whole body to create symmetrical shapes.

The style first originated in the aristocratic courts of Europe during the 15th-century.

Ballet technique has developed over centuries and evolved to incorporate folk dance, story telling, mime and more recent contemporary performance elements.

Made famous in the 20th century by Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, George Balanchine, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Sylvie Guillem, and in the 21st Century by African-American ballerina Misty Copeland.

Gemma’s Story

I have been looking for an adult beginners ballet class for over a year but there aren’t many places that cater to it, and the couple I found required you commit for a whole term without knowing whether it would work for me.

I am not very confident in new things/places and was nervous to try it out.

But then I saw Bonnie’s Ballet Workshop on the long weekend and it seemed like a great chance to try ballet in a safe place and see if I liked it.

I knew of Bonnie through my sister Steph (BCP Company Dancer) and have been to many of the BCP performances so knew Bonnie was a good teacher.

I really loved the workshop, it was engaging and a good mix of some basic stuff and some slightly more challenging steps so you could see where it could take you.

After that I was feeling very excited and a lot more confident about booking in for a class and you offered times that suited my work schedule perfectly.

The virtual classes are amazing, saves me having to travel for ages to get to a class but still feels like I am getting quality instruction.

Bonnie tailors the class to the level we are at and continue building and changing it to suit our needs, which isn’t something we would get in a big group class where you simply learn by repetition and trying to keep up.

Even if I feel like I am not making much of a difference between individual classes, I can feel the difference between the start and end of the 6 weeks.

Bonnie is a great teacher, good at thinking of alternative ways to explain movements so that everyone understands what you’re after.

Bonnie takes the time to give everyone feedback to help us improve and it works.
