Promotional video features snippets of Bonnie Curtis Projects performing in Limits(On-Demand).

Limits shares the story of a grotesque creature navigating the world through the lens of a stereotypical “hot-body”.

A creature trying to live up to the expectations of the world around her, riddled with insecurity and self-hate.

Sabotaged by her limitations.

Limits is an original work that delves into identity, societal expectations, limitations, stereotypes and experiences as a female living with disability.

Recorded at Brand X’s The Flying Nun on 18 June 2021 in front of a live audience.

Support independent dance.

About Limits

Development

In October 2020, Bonnie began developing material that was used to create a short group work. The material from this work was used as the foundations of Limits.

The 5-minute group work, titled Animal, was presented as an Alumni piece at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts’ showcase in 2020.

Bonnie worked with BCP company dancers and AMPA students completing their internship with BCP during a residency at Annandale Creative Arts Centre.

In November 2020, Bonnie began developing the tools she would use to create Limits during DirtyFeet’s Choreographic Lab Program in 2020.

Bonnie worked with 3 dancers and mentor Kay Armstrong during her 2-week residency at Readymade in Sydney.

The research questions Bonnie entered the studio with were:

– What are the limitations of my female body?

– What are society’s limitations of the female body?

– How do I embody these limitations placed on me by society?

– Are these limitations physical or psychological manifestations?

In February 2021 Bonnie was selected as an Arts on Tour Regional Artist in Residence in Picton, NSW.

During her residency, Bonnie worked with dramaturg/director Nell Ranney to develop spoken text, ideas for movement material, theatrical elements.

Bonnie also worked with sound designer and composer Fiona Lloyd Harding to develop a soundscape incorporating the spoken text.

This was used as part of a short excerpt titled Monster that was presented at March Dance 2021, part of the mixed bill (un)bound.

Bonnie continued to work with Nell Ranney to further generate ideas and solidify the overarching narrative and environment of the work.

After the residency program, Bonnie continued to work with Fiona Lloyd Harding on developing the score for Limits.

In March 2021, Bonnie was selected as a March Dance Artist in Residence at Critical Path.

Bonnie undertook a choreographic exploration of the limitations of the female body and continued to develop material from her Choreographic Lab residency.

This was used as part of a short excerpt that was presented at March Dance 2021, part of the mixed bill (un)bound.

Bonnie continued to work with mentor Kay Armstrong on how familiar movement could be transformed into something that was unfamiliar to the viewer.

Bonnie worked with sound designer Fiona Lloyd Harding on developing sound to accompany the movement phrase.

They developed a track using a phrase of spoken text that was used as part of the movement phrase.

In June 2021, Bonnie began a week-long residency at The Flying Nun by Brand X.

Bonnie worked with mentor Kay Armstrong, sound designer Fiona Lloyd Harding and lighting designer Lucia Haddad to create the 55-minute performance of Limits.

Limits premiered to an audience on June 18 and 19, 2021 as part of Brand X‘s The Flying Nun Season 6.
