‘On the hearth, a fire burns’ shares a brief glimpse at the experiences of prisoners at KL Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The work was motivated by a recent pilgrimage to Holocaust and WW2 memorial sites in Europe. Visiting these sites stirred up a multitude of emotions, thoughts and questions. I felt a sense of disbelief at the unimaginable events that took place. For me, there wasn’t a human face, just dehumanized beings, nothing more than “wastes of space”. I felt compelled to create this work to put a human face to the pain and suffering experienced by so many men, women, and children.
On the hearth, a fire burns was created by Bonnie Curtis in collaboration with her dancers.
