Bonnie Curtis is a multi-faceted artist, driven by an inquisitive imagination and a desire to discover.
Born and bred in Sydney, Bonnie trained at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts before moving to Europe to further her artistic development. Whilst in Europe, Bonnie had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s best dancers and choreographers.
Bonnie is a passionate teacher of dance and has been teaching for 10 years. She has taught technique, performance and creative development in both Australia and overseas. Her current and past appointments include Academy of Music and Performing Arts (Undergraduate Program), Te Auaha Institute of Creativity (NZ), Evolve Performance Studios, APA Macarthur, STADS, amongst many others. Bonnie is the facilitator of Interchange Australia’s dance program, which is an inclusive dance program specially catered to people with disability. Bonnie believes that everyone should experience the joy of dance, regardless of age or ability.
At heart, Bonnie is a rebel bun-head who discovered her love of dance theatre while living in Berlin. Bonnie’s practise incorporates technical elements of dance with creativity and somatic movement practices.
WHAT IS BALLET?
Ballet is a style of dance known for graceful flowing movements, turn out of the legs, precision and discipline. Ballet dancers perform elegant movements of the whole body to create symmetrical shapes.
The style first originated in the aristocratic courts of Europe during the 15th-century.
Ballet technique has developed over centuries and evolved to incorporate folk dance, storytelling, mime and more recent contemporary performance elements.
Made famous in the 20th century by Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, George Balanchine, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Sylvie Guillem, and in the 21st Century by African-American ballerina Misty Copeland.
