On The Hearth, A Fire Burns

On The Hearth, A Fire Burns shares a brief glimpse at the experiences of prisoners at KL Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The work was motivated by a recent pilgrimage to Holocaust and WW2 memorial sites in Europe. Visiting these sites stirred up a multitude of emotions, thoughts and questions. I felt a sense of disbelief at the unimaginable events that took place. For me, there wasn’t a human face, just dehumanized beings, nothing more than “wastes of space”. I felt compelled to create this work to put a human face to the pain and suffering experienced by so many men, women, and children.

On The Hearth, A Fire Burns was created by Bonnie Curtis in collaboration with her dancers.

On The Hearth, A Fire Burns was developed during a residency with Annandale Creative Arts Centre and was shared with an small audience on February 18, 2017.

The work debuted at the 2017 season of Platform Shorts, Sydney on March 17-19 at Annandale Creative Arts Centre.
